Industry News: ChatGPT tests visual ads during image generation

Enterprise advertisers gain a new high-intent visual placement and more familiar measurement routes, but should treat the US test, partner-reported results and brand-suitability pilots as early evidence rather than proof of scalable incremental performance.

TLDR;

OpenAI will test a new visual ad format while people generate images in ChatGPT, starting later in October with a small group of US advertisers. It is also adding more routes for conversion, attribution and brand-suitability measurement. The placement could reach people at a highly visual decision point, but it is still a limited test and brands should not treat early partner results as proof of incremental sales.

What happened

OpenAI's 5 October announcement says the new format will show visual ads during image generation in ChatGPT. The ads can illustrate product inspiration, usage or the experience a service enables. OpenAI says each ad will be labelled, kept separate from the image being created and unable to influence the answer. Testing is due to begin later in October in the US with an initial group of advertisers.

This is a new placement context, not simply a larger version of the standard unit already sold below responses. TechCrunch reported that OpenAI is placing the format beside an activity where the user is already thinking visually. That can expose a product while someone is designing a room, planning an outfit or imagining an event, even when the original prompt did not name a brand.

The announcement also expands the measurement stack. Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp can send conversion data from existing systems. OpenAI lists web and app attribution partners, full-funnel measurement providers and early geo-based incrementality work. It also says Negative Phrases are available to qualifying advertisers, while brand-suitability evaluation pilots are being developed with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science.

The Information reported that the changes follow advertiser complaints about limited measurement and platform maturity. That context matters. A longer partner list makes implementation easier, but it does not resolve every attribution difference or prove that the channel adds sales that would not have happened elsewhere. OpenAI's own announcement says its incrementality work remains early.

Why it matters

Image generation can reveal intent that a keyword never states directly. A customer asking for a visual concept may expose their desired style, use case, setting and constraints. A relevant ad can therefore enter before a conventional product search begins. For enterprise brands, that creates useful reach, but also a new question: whether the product is genuinely helpful to the task or merely adjacent to it.

Creative quality will be judged against the generated image experience around it. Generic display artwork may feel especially weak when the user is looking at a custom scene. Brands will need assets that communicate use, scale and context quickly, with landing pages that continue the same promise. The ad must remain clear enough that nobody confuses paid creative with the image ChatGPT generated for them.

Measurement is the larger commercial change. Existing conversion and attribution partners reduce the cost of adding ChatGPT Ads to an enterprise data stack. They do not create a common definition of incrementality. Partner-reported results in OpenAI's announcement are provider claims from selected advertisers, so media teams should use them as hypotheses for a controlled test, not as planning benchmarks.

How your brand can benefit / be affected

Start with a narrow use case where visual context helps the decision. Home, fashion, beauty, travel, automotive and entertainment brands have obvious options, but relevance matters more than category. Define the prompt situations where the offer would genuinely help, then build creative that shows the product in use rather than repeating a packshot and headline.

Set measurement before launch. Preserve OpenAI click references through redirects, align browser and server-side conversion events, and document attribution windows across Ads Manager and your analytics platform. Hold out comparable markets or audiences where possible. The goal is to separate incremental demand from customers who were already moving toward the brand through search, social or direct traffic.

Treat brand suitability as a control programme, not a checkbox. Use Negative Phrases if your account qualifies, review the planned DoubleVerify and IAS pilots, and agree escalation rules for sensitive contexts. IAS describes its work as independent measurement, but the practical coverage and reporting still need validation inside a live campaign. Keep spend limited until placement context, conversion quality and creative performance are stable enough to support a wider rollout.
