Industry News: Google puts more source links into AI Mode and AI Overviews

Enterprise brands may gain more visible citation and official-site opportunities in Google's AI answers, but must measure impressions, clicks and conversions separately because more links do not guarantee more traffic.

TLDR;

Google is putting more source links higher in AI Mode and AI Overviews, while testing a top section for the official pages users need to complete a task. News carousels and related-article links are also becoming more prominent. This creates better visibility opportunities for brands, but more links are only useful if Search Console impressions turn into qualified visits and outcomes.

What happened

Google announced five changes to how AI Search connects users with sources. It says inline links are appearing more often and higher within AI Mode and AI Overview responses. The company is also testing a dedicated section at the top of some answers when one or two official pages are the clearest place to complete a task or obtain exact information.

Timely article carousels are rolling out to more locations and languages, with a wider range of queries eligible to show them. Preferred Sources can be highlighted inside those carousels. Links to related articles at the end of some AI answers are getting thumbnails and a more prominent design.

Google also started testing clickable creator and publisher names on video results in AI Mode. Those links open a Google Search profile, not the publisher's own website, so they improve identity context inside Google's interface before they create direct referral value.

Independent coverage broadly confirms the interface changes, but it also highlights the unanswered traffic question. Search Engine Land notes that Google still needs to show whether people click these links, while Android Authority says it remains unclear whether the changes can offset traffic lost since AI Overviews launched. The official announcement provides no click-through or referral figures.

Why it matters

This is a meaningful layout change because source placement affects which brands customers notice while an AI answer is forming their view. A citation buried behind a panel has less practical value than an official page shown at the top with an explanation of why it is useful. For navigational or task-based queries, the test could become a new high-intent route into owned digital journeys.

The opportunity is selective. Google decides when an official-source block is appropriate and which pages qualify. News carousels favour timely coverage, while creator profiles depend on eligibility and live inside Google. A brand cannot assume that adding schema or publishing more pages will secure these placements.

Google's own generative AI optimisation guide still centres on established Search foundations: indexability, useful original content, clear page experience, high-quality images and video, and accurate structured information. The new layouts reward pages that can answer a specific need cleanly. They do not establish a separate GEO ranking system or a guaranteed route to citation.

Measurement must remain disciplined. A higher link can increase visibility without producing a visit, and a visit can still fail commercially. Search Console's dedicated generative AI performance reports provide impression data for AI features, but teams must combine that with clicks, landing-page behaviour and conversions to understand business value.

How your brand can benefit / be affected

Map the tasks where an official page should be the obvious destination. Examples include returns, booking changes, product compatibility, service status, store availability, regulated disclosures and account help. Give each task one authoritative URL with a direct answer, a clear next action and consistent organisation details.

For editorial and thought-leadership content, improve the evidence Google can extract and attribute. Use descriptive headings, named authors or accountable brand ownership, publication and update dates, original data and clear sourcing. Video publishers should also review Search profile eligibility and make sure profile identity matches the organisation presented on the website.

Track the rollout by page and query intent. Use the generative AI performance report to identify pages gaining impressions, then compare organic clicks, conversions and assisted journeys before and after 15 October. Annotate reporting because feature tests, geography and language expansion can create uneven changes.

Do not celebrate citation counts in isolation. Review whether Google quotes the right claim, links to the right page and sends a user who can complete the intended task. The practical win is a reliable official destination that earns visibility and produces a measurable customer outcome. Until Google publishes click evidence, treat the redesign as a better opportunity to be reached, not proof that AI Search is restoring traffic.
