TLDR;
OpenAI has expanded ChatGPT Ads to 26 more countries, taking the platform to 89 markets. It says more than 100,000 advertisers have run campaigns since the product launched eight months ago. That makes ChatGPT Ads a serious international test channel, but brands still need to prove active reach, measurement quality and sales impact in each market before moving large budgets.
What happened
OpenAI announced the rollout on 21 October. Fourteen of the new countries are in Latin America, including Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru. The expansion also covers markets in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia, with Nigeria, South Africa, Serbia, Ukraine, Cambodia, Bangladesh and Pakistan among those named. Advertisers can buy through technology partners or OpenAI's self-service Ads Manager.
The company says ChatGPT Ads is now available in 89 countries and that more than 100,000 advertisers have run campaigns. Those are provider figures, and the advertiser total counts businesses that have tried the platform rather than a disclosed number of active advertisers. AdExchanger noted separate research suggesting a lower active-advertiser figure and reported that buyers still want stronger measurement before committing more budget.
Ads remain limited to the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro and Enterprise subscribers stay ad-free. OpenAI says placements are labelled, conversations remain private from advertisers and sponsored selection does not influence the answer generated by ChatGPT.
The technical detail is useful. OpenAI's engineering team described a stateful ad system that interprets intent across multiple turns, turns conversation context into retrieval queries and embeddings, filters candidates for policy, budget and targeting, then scores and auctions them. That ad path runs separately from answer generation, and a selected ad can still fail to appear if it is judged inappropriate or arrives after the answer is ready.
Why it matters
The geographic expansion changes campaign planning more than it changes organic AI visibility. A brand can now pay for a labelled placement in many more markets, but buying an ad does not make the brand more likely to appear in ChatGPT's unsponsored answer. Teams should keep paid performance and organic representation as separate workstreams, with separate budgets and evidence.
Conversation-led advertising also creates a different relevance problem from keyword search. The system may interpret a customer's needs from several messages, including constraints that appeared earlier in the chat. Product feeds, landing pages and creative therefore need consistent facts about price, availability, eligibility and use cases. A mismatch between the ad promise and the destination will be more obvious when the placement follows a detailed conversation.
OpenAI's 100,000-advertiser figure signals adoption, but it does not establish repeat spending, market-level inventory or incremental return. The rollout spans countries with different languages, regulatory rules and payment habits. A single global campaign average could hide poor relevance or weak conversion paths in individual markets.
Measurement is the limiting factor. OpenAI says more formats, objectives, buying options and measurement capabilities are coming, which is also an admission that the product is still developing. Enterprise teams should expect reporting definitions, attribution windows and available controls to change as the platform matures.
How your brand can benefit / be affected
Start with a market-by-market eligibility and measurement check. Confirm that Ads Manager access, billing, conversion tracking, consent language and landing-page handling work in the chosen country before approving spend. Record which metrics come from OpenAI, which come from first-party analytics and how duplicate conversions are removed.
Build tests around a small set of high-intent customer problems rather than copying a broad paid-search account. Use creative that answers the likely next question, then send the user to a page with the same offer, price, stock position and conditions. Localise the substance as well as the wording, especially for delivery areas, currencies, regulated claims and returns.
Set a commercial threshold before launch. Compare ChatGPT Ads with an existing channel using qualified sessions, assisted conversions, new-customer rate and contribution after media cost. Do not use the number of countries or advertisers as proof that the channel deserves scale. Those figures describe platform reach and trial, not your brand's results.
Finally, keep paid and organic governance connected. The same product data, policy pages and brand claims may support ad review, landing-page conversion and unsponsored AI answers, but the outcomes are different. A shared evidence layer reduces contradictions, while separate reporting prevents a paid placement from being mistaken for improved AI visibility.
